Barry McMahon

Dr. Barry McMahon joins the Innovation Academy as Course Co-director and brings a wealth of diverse experience from medical device development to sales. Barry is an entrepreneur, inventor, lecturer and Chief of Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering at Tallaght Hospital. He is also Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Medicine and one of the founding members and PI’s in the Trinity Academic Gastroenterology Group (TAGG). Following an early career in medical device engineering, support and marketing Barry joined the Medical Physics & Bioengineering Group at St. James’s Hospital in 1990 where he completed an M.Sc. in Physical Sciences in Medicine in 1993. In 2005, while on sabbatical he completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at Aalborg University, Denmark. Barry’s research interests include a collaborative approach to the technical and clinical development of medical device technology.

He is recognised internationally for developing novel techniques for measurement in the gastrointestinal tract and co-invented the FLIP technique. He successfully licensed this technology to medical devices company Crospon Ltd who have developed it into a revolutionary imaging probe called EndoFLIP winning numerous awards and shortlisted for the 2011 Ernst & Young Awards. One of Barry’s ambitions is to positively impact human health by leading multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals in medical device development projects with practical applications.
